Spanish I
2007-2008
Course Overview:
Spanish I is a fun and interactive learning environment that integrates language with culture. Instruction is communicative, motivating and real. The goal of the Spanish I classroom is to teach the student to interpret and comprehend the target language when reading or writing, speak the target language effectively, write in the target language, to take risks and to work cooperatively with others.
First Nine Weeks:
Goal:
Para Empezar: This is the preliminary chapter of Realidades I in which the student will be introduced to a variety of everyday communicative situations including; greetings at different times of the day, introductions, classroom directives, beginning numbers, time, and body parts.
They will also learn to identify classroom objects, to ask questions and the Spanish Alphabet. The calendar, weather conditions, seasons and weather comparisons will be learned through this introductory chapter as well.
Chapter 1A-1B: In these chapters the student will learn to talk about activities that they like to do and activities that they do not like to do and to understand cultural perspectives on activities, they will also learn how to talk about personality traits and how to describe people. New grammar objectives will be: infinitive verbs, negative expressions, how to agree or disagree, adjectives, definite vs. indefinite articles, and placement of adjectives.
Second Nine Weeks
Goal: Chapter 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B and El día de los muertos
Chapter 2A through 3B will encompass the student’s day at school, the classroom, foods, likes and dislikes, how often things are done, and maintaining your health. Culturally the student will study cultural perspectives on friendships and school, as well as meals, diet and health.
The new grammar to be studied through these chapters includes: adjectives, definite and indefinite articles and word order. Subject pronouns, present tense conjugation of –ar,-er,ir verbs, the verbs estar and ser, and the plurals of nouns, articles, and adjectives will also be learned. The students will also learn about the significance of The Day of the Dead in Hispanic countries.
Third Nine Weeks
Goal: Chapters 4A,4B,5A,5B
Chapter 4A is about locations, activities and asking questions. In chapter 4B, the student will learn about after school activities, invitations and events. Chapter 5A and 5B cover family relationships and celebrations. The cultural perspectives which will be taught include perspectives on family and celebrations.
New grammar from these chapters will include: the verb ir, question words, the verb tener, possessive adjectives, the verb venir comparison of the verbs ser and estar.
Fourth Nine Weeks
Goal: Chapters 6A,6B,7A,7B
In this section the concentration is on the bedroom, the house, clothing and shopping. The student will begin to talk about items in the bedroom and house, make comparisons and talk about household chores and where they live, what they want and what they prefer. They will learn about cultural perspectives on homes and different types of housing.
The grammar items to be learned in these chapters are: comparisons, the superlative, stem-changing verbs poder and dormer, affirmative tú commands, the present progressive tense, stem changing verbs, the preterite tense, and direct object pronouns. Pronunciation concentrates on the letter r and rr, and n and ñ.
